The International Society of Minimally Invasive and Virtual Surgery (ISMIVS, previously known as International Society of Minimally Invasive and Noninvasive Medicine) was founded in July 2013 at the gala of the 1st Yangtze International Summit of Minimally Invasive and Noninvasive Medicine in Chongqing, China. ISMIVS envisions to accelerating the progress in minimally invasive and noninvasive medicine by promoting research, education, communication, and international collaboration.

The Personality in the Medical Education World 医学教育界的大人物
From the 2020 July issue of our ISMIVS Newsletter, we would like to introduce some pioneers in the field of minimally-invasive and noninvasive medicine. They are not only prestigious in their field but also willing to share their experience and ideas with younger doctors, hence making a great contribution to medical education. This issue features Shaheen Khazali, a leading expert in endometriosis from Britain.

Prof. Khazali is an internationally renowned expert in advanced robotic and laparoscopic endometriosis surgery and in minimally invasive gynaecology. His practice is almost exclusively dedicated to looking after women with the most severe forms of endometriosis when the disease has affected other organs such as the bowel, bladder, ureters and pelvic nerves.

Prof. Khazali has a passion for training other gynaecologists who wish to become endometriosis surgeons or those who want to acquire advanced skills in gynaecological surgery. He has trained many surgeons who are now leading centres of excellence both in the UK and abroad.

He is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences on topics related to advanced minimally invasive gynaecology. Prof. Khazali has led several innovative projects, including an online pain diary for chronic pelvic pain patients, the development of a new laparoscopic instrument to improve the safety and speed of surgery and devised a scoring system for assessing laparoscopic surgical skills of trainees. For now, he is involved in the primary study with Oxford University of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), an innovative noninvasive technology, in the treatment of endometriosis.

Successfully Closed: 2022 Annual Recognition Ceremony for Outstanding Institutions/Individuals in Clinical Application and Research of Ultrasound Therapy
2022 年度超声治疗技术临床应用及科研优秀单位/个人表彰仪式圆满落幕!

State Key Laboratory of Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineering was originally developed by a research group on ultrasound biological effects, which has a history of 35 years. The team has initially established the basic theoretical system of focused ultrasound therapy, broken through a series of key technologies of focused ultrasound therapy, and developed the world's first major ultrasound therapy medical device made in China.
超声医学工程国家重点实验室是最初的超声生物学效应课题组发展起来的,至今已有 35 年的历史,团队已经初步建立了聚焦超声治疗的基础理论体系,突破聚焦超声治疗系列关键技术,研发出全球首台中国原创超声治疗大型医疗设备。
At present, as a response to calls from the medical field, the State Key Laboratory of Ultrasound in Medicine and Engineering (SKLUME), as well as the National Engineering Research Center of Ultrasound Medicine of China (NERCUM) have established the theoretical system of biological effects of focused ultrasound in collaboration with High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) Centers, successfully built the "foundation" of the field of focused ultrasound, on which both majors of medicine and engineering have been integrated and developed. Through strategies such as specialist training, specific-field-oriented talent training, an alliance of HIFU Centers, and university-institute cooperation, the whole industry chain has been held together, including basic research in the original invention, basic research for application, application and transformation research, as well as major application research. Therefore, a model of a linked innovation chain and industry chain, and synergistic development of industry-university-research-application, is born. In the future, in-depth cooperation will be carried out with HIFU Centers at home and abroad in scientific and technological innovation, talent training and public service, so as to provide more patients with high-quality medical services that suffer less harm.
目前,在医学需求牵引下,超声医学工程国家重点实验室、超声医疗国家工程研究中心协同应用医院等,建立了聚焦超声生物学效应理论体系,成功搭建聚焦超声领域的「地基」,在此基础上实现了医学、工程「双塔」融通发展。通过专科医生培养、领域人才培养、应用医院联盟、高校院所合作等,贯穿了原始创造基础研究、应用基础研究、应用转化研究、重大应用研究整个链条,实现了创新链和产业链联动、产学研用协同发展的模式。未来,将在科技创新、人才培养与服务社会等方面与国内外临床应用医院开展深度合作,为更多患者提供受伤害更小的高品质医疗服务。

Case Studies 病例分享
While there are clear limitations to the methodology of case studies in the determination of treatment protocol and establishment of new trials, the observation of a single patient can add to our understanding of aetiology, pathogenesis, natural history, treatment option and complications to promote the medical development of a particular disease, and to the clinical practice of potential junior investigators.

HIFU Special Issue 高强度聚焦超声特刊


We are delighted to announce that the International Journal of Hyperthermia, the HIFU Special Issue (i.e. Volume 38, 2021), which was partially supported by ISMIVS, was officially released in September. The Special Issue includes 15 articles written and reviewed by world-renowned scholars and pioneers in minimally invasive and noninvasive medicine, elaborating on the status and prospects of the clinical applications of high intensity focused ultrasound on tumours that occurred in specific organs. We'll share the 15 articles included in the upcoming newsletters, stay tuned!

The safety and ablation efficacy of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation for desmoid tumors

This article is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (USgHIFU) ablation for desmoid tumours (DTs).

A total of 111 patients with histologically proven DTs were included and treated by USgHIFU ablation. The enrolled patients (32 male, 79 female, mean age 29.5 ± 1.0 years) with 145 DTs underwent 188 sessions of HIFU ablation.

In the majority of cases (143/145 cases, 98.6%), no serious adverse events were observed. The non-perfused area was observed within every treated tumour, and the median NPVR was 84.9% (range, 1.9–100%). The tumour volume reduction rate was 36.1 ± 4.2% at 3 months after treatment.

Learning Laparoscopic Radical Hysterectomy: Are We Facing an Emerging Situation?

In this review, the author presents a brief overview of the learning curve of radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer by laparotomy and laparoscopy. They also discuss factors that might be influencing this learning curve, such as the major effect of The Laparoscopic Approach for Cervical Cancer (LACC) trial and the declining incidence of radical hysterectomies.

According to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement, they conclude that radical hysterectomy is definitely a procedure declining in numbers due to extensive screening and early detection. Surgical proficiency requires a minimum number of cases performed before becoming autonomous; thus, a learning curve is getting more and more challenging to achieve, especially regarding systematic lymph node aortic staging. For residents and fellows, graduating without conducting this learning curve and performing a laparoscopic radical hysterectomy will not only lead to complications, but also affect the oncological process and, thus, survival.
